Joe Perry is on the brink of elimination from the 2017 Championship League after suffering three consecutive defeats on day one of Group Three at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
The world number nine, who entered the competition on Monday, was edged out 3-2 by fellow newcomer Barry Hawkins in the opening match of the group, before commanding 3-1 and 3-0 defeats inflicted by Neil Robertson and Ali Carter respectively left him with plenty of catching up to do going into day two.
Perry remains glued to the foot of the table and two adrift of the remaining six players, who are separated by frames won and lost following a day of high-quality action in the Midlands.
Despite winning just two of his four matches, Robertson finds himself at the summit having won 10 frames, while he is closely followed by Mark Davis, who made the highest break of the day with a wonderful contribution of 142, and back-to-back group finalist Ryan Day.
After narrowly surviving elimination in Group Two, Mark Williams looked like he was in for another scrap in the bottom two when he lost his opening couple of games, but turned things around in the evening by beating Hawkins and Day to lift himself to fourth in the table.
Hawkins and Carter also claimed two victories in Coventry, but 3-0 defeats in their final matches of the day condemned them to fifth and sixth in the table respectively going into the second day of action on Tuesday.
