Judd Trump and Barry Hawkins lead the way after winning three of their four matches on the opening day in the Winners’ Group of the 2017 Championship League at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
The left-handers are locked on three points apiece at the top of the table following the conclusion of play on Wednesday, with Trump edging his nose in front having lost two less frames than Hawkins.
They are closely followed by Mark Davis on two points, while the four remaining players each have a point and will be eager to close the gap before the Play-Offs on Thursday evening.
Reigning champion Trump, who is seeking a fourth victory in the invitational internet-streamed event, came flying out of the blocks with a magnificent total clearance of 140 on the way to a commanding 3-0 victory over David Gilbert.
Despite then losing 3-1 to John Higgins, the Ace responded by making two centuries on the way to seeing off Ryan Day 3-1, before the same scoreline was enough to overcome Davis.
He is joined at the summit of the table by World Grand Prix champion Hawkins, who continued his good recent form with wins over Davis, Day and Higgins.
Hastings’ Davis is their closest challenger after beating bottom two Gilbert and Anthony McGill, who each won just one of their opening three matches on Wednesday.
That is the same ratio of four-time World champion Higgins and World Grand Prix finalist Day, who were also beaten in two of their three games in the Winners’ Group and will be hoping to turn things around on Thursday.
