China A comeback stuns England and seals Snooker World Cup glory

China A are the 2017 Snooker World Cup winners following a dramatic 4-3 victory over England in a mouth-watering final at the Wuxi City Sports Park Stadium on Sunday.

Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo produced a brilliant fightback from 3-1 down against Judd Trump and Barry Hawkins, with a run of 59 from Ding in the decider eventually securing the title.

It is a second triumph for the Chinese duo, who also lifted the trophy in 2011, and they will each collect £77,000 for their troubles.

Following a dramatic 4-3 victory over reigning champions China B in the semi-finals, England drew first blood in the final as Trump eventually overcame Liang on the colours after a lengthy and scrappy opening frame.

Ding responded well against Hawkins with a nice break of 68 to level the scores, but a run of 57 from Trump in the doubles saw the English edge their noses back in front.

The England pair have enjoyed a very impressive World Cup debut and moved to within a frame of glory when Hawkins dominated the fourth frame against Liang to put them 3-1 to the good.

China A, who recovered from 2-0 down to see off Thailand 4-2 in the semi-finals earlier on, knew they would have to produce another inspired turnaround in order to secure a second title.

Ding got the ball rolling for them with a solid contribution of 69 to reduce the deficit, but a much closer doubles frame followed with the tension leaving him unable to watch at one point.

It went right down to the colours and, after Hawkins missed a blue to the corner from a tight angle, Liang knocked it in along with the pink to set up a seventh and final frame to determine who would lift the 2017 Snooker World Cup.

Despite surrendering the two-frame cushion, England will have been confident having come through deciders in each of their previous two matches in the knockout phase, as Trump faced Ding in a battle of the two captains.

An early mistake from the Ace allowed the home favourite an early chance, from which he made a nice break of 59 before missing an easy red as the tension rose ever higher.

However, Trump was unable to respond and, more often than not able to deliver under the most intense pressure, Ding’s further contribution of 29 sealed the deal for the host nation.
