Ronnie O’Sullivan began his bid for an eighth Masters title with a commanding 6-2 victory over Stuart Bingham at Alexandra Palace on Monday.

O'Sullivan, the reigning UK Champion, fired in two centuries and a 96 as he subjected Bingham to an eighth First Round exit in nine appearances at The Masters.

Bingham took the opening frame but failed to find his range thereafter, and 'The Rocket' delighted a 1,900-capacity crowd at Ally Pally to seal a Quarter-Final meeting with Ryan Day.

"It is hard to analyse how you played but I tried to be as professional and disciplined and draw on all my experience," O'Sullivan told BBC Sport. "It was getting tense and I was relieved to get over the line.

"He looked like he was getting stronger at the end. I made a few mistakes, let him in and the game can punish you sometimes.

"You have to put your foot to the metal and go as hard as you can for as long as you can.

"I can play for another 10 years but I get tired now. I have had insomnia for seven years and it catches you out sometimes, I felt really tired today.

"I was not sure how I would do but the adrenaline kicked in and you hit a slump again but it kicks in again."

O'Sullivan missed a host of chances to clinch the first frame, and it was Bingham who eventually got it under his belt, but breaks of 59 and 96 quickly moved the world number three in front.

He then followed up with a tremendous 134 clearance and a 111 after the interval to stamp his authority before making a 60 to go 5-1 up.

Bingham stopped the rot with a break of 71 and looked to have frame eight in his grasp after compiling a 62 break, but only for O'Sullivan to clear with 66 and force a re-spotted black.

After a tense exchange, it was 'The Rocket' who rolled in a mid-range cut to complete the victory.
