Brilliant Bingham Inflicts Back-to-Back Whitewashes

Stuart Bingham produced one of the most memorable nights of his career to date, with 6-0 whitewashes of Mark Selby and Neil Robertson in Guildford on Thursday evening.

The world number ten also secured his place in the end of season play-offs courtesy of his perfect night which saw him romp to maximum points and collect £16,000 for his night's work.

Bingham began the evening with a rout of world number one Mark Selby, ending The Jester's slim hopes of reaching the play-offs and inflicting the first whitewash of the campaign.

Three successive half centuries saw Bingham storm into a 3-0 lead, as Selby struggled to convert break-building chances in the early stages.

Selby could only sit and admire from his seat as the Basildon ace fired in a sensational 128 break to assure himself of the win, before following it up with a 122 to add another £1,000 bonus to his earnings.

A run of 50 was enough for Bingham to clinch the final frame and subject Selby to a humiliating whitewash and his third straight defeat in Group A.

Bingham then picked up from where he left off as he returned for his second match to round off the night against Masters champion Neil Robertson, knowing that a point would make his play-off place safe.

Bingham, last year's Australian Open champion, stunned Aussie ace Robertson with a magnificent 135 break in the opener - the highest of the tournament so far - and one which set the tone for the rest of a one-sided encounter.

The right-hander demonstrated fine safety play in capturing frame two and edged a narrow third by just nine points to retain his perfect record on the night.

A show-stopping break of 127 signalled Bingham's fourth century of the night and resigned an out of sorts Robertson to defeat as he moved into a 4-0 lead.

Robertson again failed to make an impact in among the balls, losing frame five before again being confined to his seat as he watched his relentless opponent add a 92 to his high break tally to round off another 6-0 win.

Bingham ends his regular season having taken seven points from a possible eight and heads into November's finals night as a clear title contender in his debut season.

John Higgins continued his impressive record against pre-tournament favourite Judd Trump as he cruised to a 4-2 victory to top Group B.

It was Trump who drew first blood with runs of 36 and 42, but four-time World Champion Higgins hit back in emphatic style with a 114 in the next.

The Wizard of Wishaw took a stranglehold on the match by claiming the next two frames for a 3-1 lead, and any hopes of Trump avenging his agonising defeat to the Scot in last month's Shanghai Masters final were dashed when Higgins knocked in a 63 to guarantee all two points.

A 78 break from Trump in the sixth proved a mere consolation and he now finds himself embroiled in a three-man battle for the final play-off spot, with Higgins all but sealing his place with four points.
