Scotland secure Snooker World Cup glory in Wuxi

Higgins and Maguire claim glory in Wuxi (credit:Eurosport)

John Higgins and Stephen Maguire claimed the first silverware of the 2019/20 season as they lifted the Snooker World Cup trophy in Wuxi, thrashing China B 4-0 in the final.

Higgins and Maguire had lost in the final to China B four years ago but turned the tables at the second time of asking to clinch Scotland's first Snooker World Cup title since 1996.

The Scots began the final day of the invitational by dethroning defending champions China A with a commanding 4-1 triumph over home hero Ding Junhui and Yan Bingtao - who produced a break of 123 in frame three.

They then completed a memorable double over the host nation by whitewashing Liang Wenbo and Zhou Yuelong in the final to secure the $200,000 top prize.

Higgins was part of the Scotland team which first triumphed in Bangkok 23 years ago and marked a perfect start to the new season after losing out to Judd Trump in the World Championship final last month.

"One of my proudest moments in snooker was when I partnered Stephen (Hendry) and Alan (McManus) all those years ago to win the World Cup," said Higgins - who shares a practice facility with Maguire in Glasgow.

"We came so close four years ago, but this more than makes up for it. A brilliant feeling and a great partner. It is a brilliant moment for both our careers."

Maguire added: "I've never felt nerves like that in any professional match I've played, It's so difficult playing with a partner.

"You can take it if you miss a ball on your own. It is a weird feeling and it just adds pressure."
