Mark Selby beaten despite 147 break at the Champion of Champions

Selby congratulates Robertson (credit:ITV Sport)

Mark Selby produced a magnificent maximum break at the 2018 Champion of Champions on Thursday, but it was not enough to avert a 4-3 defeat to Neil Robertson.

Selby landed the third 147 break of his career and the first in the history of the Champion of Champions, but was eventually edged out by Robertson for the second time in seven days.

The maximum came in the second frame of their Group Two Semi-Final as Leicester's Selby thrilled the Coventry crowd, but he does not receive any prize money bonus.

Selby went on to lead 3-2 but only for Robertson to secure back-to-back frames and book his place in the evening's group final against either Mark Allen or Barry Hawkins.

"I'm disappointed to lose but I didn't feel as though I had too many clear cut chances the last two frames to try and get over the line," Selby told ITV Sport.

"I played well but I probably missed the boat a little at one-all, if I'd have gone 2-1 up, who knows, I might have ran away with the match?

"Neil's played solid the last two frames and didn't really give me a chance.

"It's nice to make a 147 live on TV but Barry [Hearn] is obviously struggling a bit at the moment so I suppose that's why there's no money in this one!"

The 147 was Selby's first in five years since registering the 100th in professional competition at the 2013 UK Championship and is the 144th in snooker history.
