A red hot Mark Selby produced three centuries and a further two 90-plus breaks in a 6-2 victory over Stephen Maguire in the opening round of the 2019 Masters at Alexandra Palace on Wednesday.

The world number one recovered from losing the first frame as he turned on the style with a ruthless scoring spree to complete the Quarter-Final line-up.

He will now face Judd Trump in a mouth-watering tie on Friday afternoon, and admitted to Eurosport: "It's great to get off to a good start and perform the way I did.

"In the first frame I was a little bit edgy and trying too hard again as I have done in the last few, but after that I just thought 'go out there and relax, at least if you lose, enjoy it.'

"After that I more or less played faultless snooker.

"It was a strange game but Stephen, in patches, looked good. He kept going into the pack and not landing on anything, if he lands on something then he probably gets a frame-winning break himself and it's a totally different match then.

"I practice day-in, day-out really hard, I work hard and obviously I want to win every tournament I play in and sometimes I try too hard," he added.

A tight opening frame hinged on the final brown, and it was Maguire who potted it to hit the front, but only for Selby to power in a break of 115 for parity.

The three-time Masters Champion followed up with a clinical break of 95 and added a clearance of 125 to move two clear.

Maguire got over the line in a tactical fifth frame to close the gap, but Selby replied with a majestic clearance of 133 to restore daylight.

The relentless break-building continued as 'The Jester' added a 96 to move within a frame of victory - which he sealed by taking following frame by 66 points to nil.
