Anthony McGill secures 2017 Snooker Shoot-Out glory

Anthony McGill became the latest new name on the Snooker Shoot-Out trophy as he defeated Xiao Guodong in the final on Sunday to claim his second career ranking title.

The 26-year-old, who also won the Indian Open last July, prevailed through a field of 128 players in the unique shot-clock competition at the Watford Colosseum.

McGill followed up his victories over Oliver Lines and Jamie Curtis-Barrett in the early rounds by defeating Mark King, Jack Lisowski, Anthony Hamilton and Shaun Murphy on Sunday to reach the final.

There, he denied China's Xiao by 67 points to 19 to scoop the £32,000 top prize and bolster his push for a place in the world's top 16.

"Every year you think 'I might have a chance here' but it never works out," McGill told ITV4. "To be standing here as winner is amazing.

"I didn't play as well as I'd have liked in the first two rounds but after I won my Third Round match earlier, I played really well.

"There's no way on God's earth this should be a ranking event, it's not even snooker rules, but I'm going to benefit and I'll take it!"

McGill survived a scare in the final as he sent a red off the table, resulting in ball in-hand to his opponent, but the Chinese cueist failed to take advantage.

McGill returned to the table and held his nerve to dominate the decider by a comfortable margin and clinch victory in front of a lively Watford crowd.

Xiao, who also finished runner-up in 2015, had defeated Ken Doherty, David Gilbert and Andy Hicks on the day to progress to the final, only to fall agonisingly short once again.

His Quarter-Final win over Gilbert came under controversial circumstances as he appeared to time foul, only for the referee to miss the incident, allowing Xiao to go on and complete victory.

Gilbert made his frustrations clear as he left the arena, however World Snooker took the decision not to replay the frame, releasing a statement citing that the referee and marker 'were both unable to hear the shot clock beeps'.

Hicks, who received an invite as an amateur top-up, enjoyed a fine run to the Semi-Finals - picking up £8,000 for his efforts.
