Barry Hawkins stars in England whitewash at Snooker World Cup as Thailand stun Scotland on opening day

England's Barry Hawkins reacts

Barry Hawkins enjoyed an impressive Snooker World Cup debut as he inspired England to a comprehensive 5-0 whitewash of Switzerland on the opening day of the 2017 tournament, while Thailand shocked Scotland 3-2 at the Wuxi City Sports Park Stadium.

Along with teammate Judd Trump, the world number six was making his first appearance in the biannual team event and made a strong start with runs of 59 and 60 to take the opening frame.

Trump doubled the lead before a neat 92 clearance from Hawkins guaranteed England the victory and, after the lead was extended to 4-0, a further contribution of 53 saw the Hawk round off a commanding whitewash of the helpless Swiss pairing of Alexander Ursenbacher and Darren Paris.

Home favourites Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo also enjoyed a perfect start with China A – hitting breaks of 54, 78 and 71 in a 5-0 rout of the Republic of Ireland’s Fergal O’Brien and Ken Doherty – as did Wales’ Mark Williams and Ryan Day against Kurt Maflin and Christopher Watts of Norway, while Brazil repeated the feat against Malaysia.

Meanwhile, reigning champions China B made a solid opening to their title defence with a top break of 112 in a 4-1 victory over Finland, as Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen and Joe Swail also enjoyed a success by that margin against Cyprus.

However, there was no joy for the Scots, as John Higgins and Anthony McGill were stunned 3-2 by the Thai pairing of Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Noppon Saengkham.

Despite losing the opening frame, Thailand won the next two before snatching the fourth on the black to secure the win – meaning that a stunning break of 130 from Scotland in the fifth proved to be a mere consolation.

Malta also claimed an impressive scalp with a 3-2 success over Neil Robertson’s Australia.

Alex Borg was the hero for the Maltese as, after seeing off Robertson in the opening frame, he snatched the fourth on the black against Kurt Dunham to seal the win.

Marco Fu had runs of 103, 73 and 51 as Hong Kong saw off Germany 4-1, while breaks of 62 and 67 helped Belgium overcome Egypt by the same scoreline.

Elsewhere, Iran were narrow 3-2 winners over Pakistan after taking the decider on the colours, as Israel edged past India by a single frame.
