Jimmy White ends Crucible curse with World Seniors Championship title

White finally gets his hands on silverware in Sheffield

Jimmy White ended 38 years of hurt at The Crucible by winning the 2019 World Seniors Championship, defeating Darren Morgan 5-3 in the final.

White, who had lost in six World Championship finals - the first of which in 1984 - gained a degree of redemption by finally lifting silverware at the sport's spiritual home.

The 57-year-old, who continues to compete on the professional tour, followed up his 2010 World Seniors title by denying 2011 champion Morgan in a tense final.

"I'm so delighted to win here," said White. "It sounds strange to be world champion at the Crucible!"

"I have been playing really well, I lost the form on Thursday coming here and today I managed to get my game together and I felt very strong."

White had begun the final day in Sheffield by defeating former world number three James Wattana 3-1 and found himself trailing 1-0 and 2-1 early in the final.

However, 'The Whirlwind' produced breaks of 51 and 53 in the following two frames to hit the front, and though the Welshman leveled at three-all, White fired in a vintage 86 break to move one away from victory.

A nail-biting eighth frame went down to the final pink, but White held his nerve to get over the line and clinch the £25,000 title.

Morgan had seen off Ireland's Leo Fernadez 3-0 in the Semi-Finals earlier in the day, following on from a Quarter-Final win over seven-time World Champion Stephen Hendry.

He admitted: "I knew I was coming into this in a bit of form so it would have been nice to add the World Seniors.

"But I think it's fair to say he deserved one world title here!

"As much as I wanted to win, I couldn't think of a nicer person to lose to."
