Brilliant Stuart Bingham claims English Open title

Stuart Bingham secured his fifth ranking title at the 2018 English Open courtesy of a 9-7 victory over Mark Davis in the final in Crawley.

Bingham, the 2015 World Champion, held his nerve in a close-run contest to deny Davis his first ranking title and clinch the £70,000 winner's cheque at the K2 Centre.

The two players could not be separated after 14 frames, but a timely century in frame 15 proved pivotal as Bingham went on to seal victory in the season's first Home Nation Series event.

"I'm just speechless," Bingham told Eurosport. "We both started off slowly today but we got going just before the break.

"At 5-4, what a big turning point, fair play to Mark for owning up. Had it been 6-4 I'd have been fearing the worst.

"It's been a rocky road the last 18 months for me and my family but I've had that self-belief," added Bingham, who served a four-month suspension last October for breach of betting rules.

Davis was appearing in his first ranking final after 27 years as a professional but fell narrowly short of a fairy-tale triumph and admitted: "It wasn't meant to be but I’ve had a great week.

"If you’d have given me the final before this week I'd have obviously taken it but once you get to the final, you want to win."

Davis, who thrashed Ronnie O'Sullivan 6-1 in the Semi-Finals, defied a 51 break from Bingham to clinch the opening frame of the match.

Bingham hit back with a break of 75 and edged frame three to go ahead, before Davis took the fourth to restore parity.

Bingham dominated frame five to go back in front, and after Davis responded with a superb break of 72, 'Ball Run' made a 77 to make it 4-3.

Davis, though, hit back magnificently with a clearance of 136 to ensure the pair ended the first session locked level at four apiece.

Davis seemingly picked up from where he left off with a 94 break to seal the first frame of the evening session and go in front.

The impressive scoring continued as Bingham followed up in with back-to-back breaks of 78 and 73 to move 6-5 ahead.

A key moment in frame ten saw Davis declare a foul on himself, allowing Bingham to punish with the 78 break.

Davis levelled again before producing a break of 65, but Bingham rallied with successive breaks of 82 and 102 to move within a frame of victory.

Davis battled hard to force a decider, but it was Bingham who held firm to edge a low-scoring 16th frame and take the title.
