Yuan Sijun sends John Higgins crashing out of the German Masters

Chinese talent Yuan in action

World number 65 Yuan Sijun pulled off a First Round upset at the 2019 German Masters as he knocked out four-time World Champion John Higgins in a last-frame decider on Thursday.

The 18-year-old, 25 years Higgins' junior, recovered from 3-1 down and held his nerve in a nail-biting decider to book his place in the Last 16 at Berlin's Tempodrom.

A high break of just 58 helped Higgins on the way to a 3-1 interval lead before the Chinese teenager fired in consecutive breaks of 68, 54 and 51 to hit the front.

Higgins stopped the rot with a break of 93 but was left to rue numerous missed chances in the decider as Yuan potted the decisive blue, pink and black to clinch victory.

Elsewhere, defending champion Mark Williams continued his charge with a 5-0 whitewash of Joe Perry which included breaks of 54, 53, 53 and 63.

World number 90 Duane Jones pulled off a superb 5-2 scalp of world number 16 Jack Lisowski with a high break of 129 added to an earlier brace of 62 breaks.

Neil Robertson produced breaks of 65, 60, 56 and 78 in a 5-1 victory over Kurt Maflin to book his place in the Last 16, while Stuart Bingham saw off Jimmy Robertson 5-2 with a top break of 130 in the opening frame.

World number one Mark Selby fired in three century breaks (106, 120 and 127) on his way to a 5-1 rout of Ricky Walden, as Xiao Guodong dispatched Ryan Day by the same scoreline with a brace of tons to boot.

Fergal O'Brien began his clash against Ding Junhui with a break of 130 but eventually succumbed to the Chinese star 5-3, while last week's 147 hero David Gilbert defeated Ben Woollaston 5-2 in a low-scoring affair.

Stephen Maguire, the 2012 German Masters runner-up, thrashed Robert Milkins 5-1 with back-to-back breaks of 81 and 82 along the way, while Kyren Wilson wrapped up a routine 5-2 win over Peter Ebdon with a high break of 117.
