Imperious Ronnie O'Sullivan storms to Shanghai Masters glory

O'Sullivan lands his 30th career ranking title (credit:Quest)

Ronnie O'Sullivan claimed his 30th career ranking title at the 2017 Shanghai Masters after a 10-3 rout of rival Judd Trump in the final on Saturday.

O'Sullivan, who first claimed this title in 2009, continued his imperious run of form to brush aside the Bristolian and scoop the £150,000 top prize at the Shanghai Grand Stage.

Having also won the English Open and finished runner-up in the Champion of Champions in the space of a month, 'The Rocket' maintained his rampant run to leapfrog John Higgins into second on the all-time list of ranking event winners.

"My mind this week has been as good as it's ever been so to come out a winner here is fantastic," O'Sullivan told World Snooker.

"I've had a fantastic four or five weeks, winning in Barnsley, getting to the final in Coventry and now winning here.

"I do feel tired but I don't mind feeling tired if I'm winning tournaments.

"It ranks up there as one of the best victories of my career against someone like Judd who's a very strong player.

"Judd was playing fantastically all week whitewashing people 5-0 so I knew he was in good form," he added.

O'Sullivan, who also pocketed the £3,000 tournament high break bonus for his 144 against Gary Wilson in Round One, began the final in emphatic fashion by racing to the opening seven frames without reply.

Trump took the following two frames to trail 7-2 at the end of the first session but ultimately left himself too much to do as O'Sullivan returned to secure the three frames he required for glory.

After clinching the opening frame by 77 points to 15, O'Sullivan quickly doubled his lead courtesy of a break of 91.

He then edged a low-scoring third before rattling in consecutive breaks of 76, 81, 56 and 70 to make it seven frames without reply from a shell-shocked Trump.

Trump did, however, get off the mark in style with a fine break of 102 and edged the ninth by just 17 points to double his tally.

The O'Sullivan procession resumed after the restart as he piled in a break of 108 to edge ever-closer to the winning line.

Trump responded with a 64 break on the way to trailing 8-3, but despite making a 63 in frame 12, the left-hander missed a frame-ball black and was madr to pay as O'Sullivan added to his 30-point tally and cleared the table.

The five-time World Champion wasted no time in sealing the deal as he got over the line in the following frame, much to the delight of a capacity crowd.

The triumph moves O'Sullivan back up to fourth in the world rankings ahead of his next Home Nation Series campaign at the Northern Ireland Open next week.
