Judd Trump stormed into the Last 32 of the 2019 International Championship with a commanding 6-2 win over Zhang Anda in Daqing on Monday, while Mark Williams and Jack Lisowski suffered early exits.
Appearing in his first ranking tournament since being crowned World Champion back in May, Trump continued his bright start to the campaign by sweeping aside home hopeful Zhang.
Trump had fired in three centuries in his preliminary round win over Northern Ireland’s Jordan Brown on Sunday and picked up from where he left off, adding a further two tons in seeing off Zhang.
The first two frames were shared before Trump found his range with breaks of 55, 141 and 76 en route to a 5-1 lead.
Zhang overturned a 68 break with a fine effort of 70 to stop the rot, but Trump hit back immediately with a stunning break of 102 to seal the deal.
Three-time World Champion Williams, meanwhile, was among a clutch of big names to bow out at the first hurdle after he went down 6-2 to fellow Welshman Jak Jones.
Jones, the world number 75, took advantage of a below-par Williams with high breaks of 95 and 118 as he set up a Second Round meeting with Robert Milkins.
After surviving a huge scare from 15-year-old wildcard Wu Yize on Sunday, John Higgins continued his progress with a 6-4 victory over David Grace.
Mark Allen stepped up the defence of his title with an emphatic 6-1 rout of Sam Craigie which included high breaks of 66, 141 and 66 from the Northern Irishman.
Three-time World Champion Mark Selby also sealed his spot in the Last 32 courtesy of a 6-3 win over Liam Highfield which included back-to-back breaks of 77 in the first session.
Shaun Murphy came through a deciding frame thriller to edge out emerging star Yuan Sijun, with the former World Champion holding his nerve on the final black to snatch victory.
A century and seven breaks above 50 were not enough for 19-year-old Yuan as he watched Murphy clinch a crucial fifth frame after requiring a snooker.
Elsewhere, Riga Masters champion Yan Bingtao continued his unbeaten start to the season in ranking competition by dispatching compatriot Chang Bingyu 6-3.
Xiao Guodong fell victim to the ‘three miss rule’ in his clash with Ashley Carty but eventually recovered to edge through in a last-frame decider thanks to a break of 79.
Chinese superstar Ding Junhui produced two century breaks as he came from 3-1 down to defeat Zhao Xintong 6-4 in a high quality contest, while Liang Wenbo staged a fine fightback from 4-1 down to deny Duane Jones in a decider.
Lisowski looked to be heading for Round Two as he established leads of 4-1 and 5-4 over Andrew Higginson, but only for the Cheshire cueist to tear up the script and prevail 6-5 despite a high break of just 56.
