Stephen Maguire produced a remarkable fightback from 4-0 down to edge out Mark Williams 6-5 on Wednesday afternoon, while defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan also booked his place in the Quarter-Finals after thrashing Jack Lisowski 6-1.

Maguire, the 2004 UK Champion, looked to be heading for a crushing defeat at the hands of the current World Champion but rallied back with the aid of three consecutive centuries.

Breaks of 51 and 81 had helped Williams on the way establishing a 4-0 interval lead, but the Scot appeared rejuvenated after the restart and blasted in sensational breaks of 122, 120 and 109 before levelling in frame eight.

A break of 97 saw Maguire make it five on the spin to go in front, though Williams stopped the rot in frame ten to force a decider.

Maguire, though, held firm and compiled a decisive break of 63 to advance to the Last Eight at the York Barbican.

"That shocked me - that's the best comeback I've ever made," Maguire told Eurosport.

"I went for absolutely everything at 4-0 down because it couldn't have been any worse.

"I had nothing to give in the first four frames, I made it so easy, I just thought I would let loose.

"I'll never go into a match calm again because I can't play, I would rather be just smashing everything about, so I've learned my lesson there."

Reigning champion O'Sullivan took another step towards a record-breaking seventh UK title by brushing aside in-form Lisowski.

Lisowski made a bright start by securing the opening frame but found himself on the receiving end of a devastating O'Sullivan display as 'The Rocket' produced breaks of 88, 118, 112 and 68 to claim victory on his 43rd birthday.

"I was not on my best, best game but I dug in," O'Sullivan told BBC Sport.

"It can be difficult to assess a match when you are playing. You need to watch it.

"I haven't been great in the tournament so far. I have played better, but my consistency is better.

"I still get super, super nervous but you have to find a way to manage that. If you have any aspirations to win, you have to perform under pressure.

"He is great player with great talent and all the shots, but he misses a few easy ones. You can't afford to do that and win consistently. It can be a tough game."

Lisowski admitted: "I lost my way after I lost the third frame. He put me under a lot of pressure and I lost my concentration. He's in good nick and I got my butt kicked.

"John Higgins beat me badly at the World Championship and I came back, so hopefully I can come back stronger again.

"I made it quite easy for him and I missed a lot of balls. I don't know why I played so badly."
