Ronnie O’Sullivan stepped up the defence of his Players Championship title with a 6-4 victory over John Higgins to reach the Semi-Finals in Preston on Friday.

O'Sullivan remained on course to become the first player ever to retain this prestigious trophy as he edged out his age-old rival with the aid of two century breaks.

The world number three will now face top seed Mark Allen in the second Semi-Final on Saturday.

"We both missed a few chances," O'Sullivan told ITV Sport. "The table was playing quite difficult, the cushions were quite pingy, so it was a bit of a challenge.

"I don't class myself as a potter so I'm just trying to play safely [at the moment].

"John is the most complete player after him. But he's struggling now you can see.

"You get nervous against John because you know what he's capable of. You've just got to hang on in there.

"It's his confidence maybe [at the moment], he's not seeing it as well as he does."

A cagey start to the contest saw the opening two frames shared, and after O'Sullivan took the third frame, Higgins replied with a 96 break to restore parity.

O'Sullivan then found his range with superb back-to-back breaks of 101 and 92 to open up a 4-2 lead before Higgins responded with successive breaks of 61 and 65 in frame seven to peg back.

The Rocket then compiled with 998th career century - a 116 clearance - to move to the verge of victory, and after Higgins kept his hopes alive by sealing frame eight, O'Sullivan averted the need for a decider with a break of 53 to get over the line.
