Kyren Wilson battles back to claim Paul Hunter Classic crown

Wilson picks up his second ranking trophy (credit:Eurosport)

Kyren Wilson recovered from 2-0 down with four consecutive frames to defeat Peter Ebdon and claim the 2018 Paul Hunter Classic title in Furth on Sunday.

Wilson, whose only previous ranking triumph came at the 2015 Shanghai Masters, came through successive last-frame deciders in the previous two rounds before denying Ebdon a first ranking title in six years.

The world number nine had begun the day by dispatching Hammad Miah 4-1 in the Last 16, before holding his nerve to edge out Daniel Wells in a deciding frame.

Wilson looked to be sailing into the final when he took a 2-0 lead over Peter Lines, but only for the veteran Yorkshireman to reply with three on the spin and hit the front.

Wilson, though, recovered to force a decider before powering in a break of 64 to get over the line.

Ebdon, who turns 48 on Monday, was bidding to become the second oldest winner of a ranking tournament and began the final brightly by establishing a 2-0 lead with a high break of 66.

A tense third frame hinged on the final pink, and when Ebdon failed to pot it, Wilson stepped in to punish and follow up with the black to get off the mark.

He then found his range by compiling a clinical clearance of 120 to level before taking frame five to move ahead.

Wilson made no mistake in wrapping up the victory, following up a break of 68 with a 57 to clinch the £20,000 top prize.

Ebdon had kick-started his run on the final day with a 4-0 whitewash of Thepchaiya Un-Nooh before thrashing Lee Walker 4-1 to reach the Semi-Finals.

There, the 2002 World Champion brushed aside youngster Scott Donaldson 4-1 after the Scotsman had won the opening frame with a break of 85.

Ebdon was appearing in his first ranking final since the 2012 Australian Open but had to settle for the £10,000 runner-up cheque at the Stadthalle.
