Live Snooker on Wednesday March 6: Players Championship 2019 Day Three preview and order of play

Two multiple World Champions collide in a mouth-watering First Round tie at the 2019 Players Championship on Wednesday, while the Quarter-Finals also commence in Preston.

The higher-seeded players have prevailed in all but one of the six matches at the Preston Guild Hall so far this week, setting up a number of box office Quarter-Final ties.

The final two First Round fixtures take place simultaneously in Wednesday's afternoon session, with the headline act a show-down between world number one Mark Selby and world number four John Higgins.

The decorated duo are both looking to improve on below-par records in this competition, with neither having surpassed the Semi-Final stage since 2011.

For the first time in four years, Selby's number one ranking is now under serious threat going in to next month's World Championship and 'The Jester' will be determined to end a near two-year wait for a ranking final appearance on UK soil.

His last ranking triumph came in last September's China Championship when he defeated Higgins 10-9 in a nail-biting final.

After admitting he had "fallen out of love with the game" at the backend of 2018, Higgins appears to have recapture glimpses of his vintage form, following up a Quarter-Final appearance at the Welsh Open with a run to the Semi-Finals of the Indian Open last weekend.

He now faces a swift return to action against one of the most granite all-round performers on the circuit and is tasked with a tough examination if he is to set up a meeting with Ronnie O'Sullivan on Friday.

The afternoon's other tie sees English Open champion Stuart Bingham take on German Masters finalist David Gilbert.

Bingham, runner-up in last month's Welsh Open, has enjoyed a welcomed return to form this season but is in need of another strong run in any of the upcoming majors as he aims to protect his top 16 status.

Incredibly, Bingham has won all nine of his previous meetings with Gilbert, including a 6-2 victory in the Last 32 of this season's UK Championship on the way to reaching the Semi-Finals.

Gilbert has proved one of the dark horses of the season so far, climbing into the world's top 16 for the first time in his career on the back of runs to the World Open and German Masters finals.

The opening Quarter-Final tie takes centre stage in the evening as two of snooker's brightest attacking talents collide, with Judd Trump taking on Jack Lisowski.

The two practice partners and former flatmates will put their friendship to one side once again as they face off for a place in the Semis.

Trump, the reigning World Grand Prix champion, is the only player eligible to win the Coral Cup and additional £125,000 bonus should he go on to win both this tournament and the upcoming Tour Championship.

Winner of the Masters and Northern Ireland Open in a glittering season, Trump set his stall out in style on Tuesday with a 6-0 drubbing of Jimmy Robertson and will be keen to pick up from where he left off.

Lisowski, meanwhile, continues to chase down his maiden ranking title, having reached his first final in the opening event of the season - the Riga Masters - losing out to Neil Robertson.

He began with a superb 6-4 win over German Masters champion Kyren Wilson on Tuesday night and will now look to get one over on his stablemate.

Lisowski is facing Trump for the fourth time this season, having won one of their three encounters so far and five of their 11 in total.

The action gets underway from 1pm GMT, with all matches to be contested over the best of 11 frames.
