Ronnie O’Sullivan continues his pursuit of a record-breaking seventh UK Championship title when he takes on three-time finalist Ken Doherty in Round Two on Sunday.

O'Sullivan, who is tied on six UK crowns with Steve Davis, has made an explosive start to the season and aims to maintain that blistering form in York.

The Rocket launched the defence of his title with a routine 6-1 win over amateur Luke Simmonds earlier in the week and now comes up against Irish veteran Doherty for the first time in eight years.

O'Sullivan, winner of the Shanghai Masters and Champion of Champions this season, also finished runner-up to Judd Trump in the recent Northern Ireland Open, and with rival Mark Selby having suffered a shock First Round exit here, could close the gap on the world number one spot if he were to retain the title.

Doherty, who made his UK Championship debut back in 1992, is looking to reach Round Three for the first time since 2014 and stave off BBC punditry duties for a little longer.

The 49-year-old, runner-up in 1994, 2001 and 2002, pulled off an impressive 6-2 victory over emerging star Yuan Sijun in Round One and is now out to cause a major upset at The Barbican.

Doherty, however, has not been beyond the Last 64 stage of a ranking tournament this season and must go back 15 years for his last competitive victory over O'Sulivan.

This contest marks a repeat of the 2001 UK Championship final, which O'Sullivan won 10-1 - the most emphatic scoreline since the final was made best of 19 frames 25 years ago.

O'Sullivan has won 16 of their 25 previous meetings, including a 9-5 victory in the Last 16 of this event back in 1993 on the way to becoming the youngest winner of a ranking event at the age of 17 years and 358 days, paving the way for a further 32 ranking titles over the next 25 years.

Their latest show-down gets underway from 1pm GMT on Sunday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames.

Either emerging star Zhou Yuelong or three-time Six Reds Champion Mark Davis will await the winner in the Last 32.
