Ronnie O’Sullivan v John Higgins: Players Championship 2019 preview - Timeless rivalry continues in Preston

Two of the all-time greats collide in a mouth-watering Quarter-Final at the 2019 Players Championship on Friday as reigning champion Ronnie O’Sullivan faces John Higgins.

With 64 ranking titles between them, the illustrious 'Class of 92' duo have been there, seen it and got the t-shirt when it comes to winning tournaments, and both will be keen to add to their tally in the twilight of their careers.

O'Sullivan is aiming to become the first player ever to successfully retain this trophy, having claimed glory in Llandudno 12 months ago.

He began his title defence with a 6-4 win over Barry Hawkins on Monday, though it was his bizarre post-match interviews in an Australian accent which grabbed the headlines as opposed to his exploits on the table.

O'Sullivan, who has also picked up the Champion of Champions and UK Championship titles this term, is closing in on an historic 1,000 career centuries, needing just five more to complete the feat.

Higgins, meanwhile, made a swift return to action after reaching the Semi-Finals of the Indian Open last weekend but showed little sign of burnout in his 6-4 victory over world number one Mark Selby in Round One.

The four-time World Champion had previously reached just one Quarter-Final in six appearances in this event and now has the opportunity to break new ground and get one over on his age-old rival.

This will be the second meeting between the box office pair this season, with O'Sullivan prevailing 6-3 in November's Champion of Champions Quarter-Finals with no fewer than four century breaks to his name.

In total, they have met 63 times over the past 25 years, with 'The Rocket' progressing on 32 occasions to Higgins' 28, plus three draws.

Their latest encounter gets underway from 1pm GMT and will be contested over the best of 11 frames.

Number one seed Mark Allen will await the winner in the Semi-Finals on Saturday afternoon.
