Mark Selby secured his first ranking title of 2019 at the English Open in Crawley by thrashing David Gilbert 9-1 in the final.

The three-time World Champion, whose most recent ranking triumph came at the China Championship last September, returned to the winner's circle in emphatic fashion by dropping just one frame against a helpless Gilbert.

The world number five compiled two centuries and a further four breaks above 70 as he raced to a 16th career ranking title at the K2 Centre.

"It's amazing, I’m quite emotional," Selby told World Snooker. "Over the last 12 months, mentally it has been tough.

"I have been second guessing myself, questioning myself and wondering if I would win another tournament again - it was that bad.

"I was playing well in practice then in matches I have been crumbling and not showing anything, it was frustrating. To win a trophy is great in terms of getting the confidence back.

"I'm gutted for David because he's a great player and an even better lad off the table. He keeps knocking on the door, it's only a matter of time before he turns one of the finals into a win and when he does that I think he’ll win a lot more."

Selby settled quickly into the final and raced to the opening five frames with high breaks of 88, 68, 79 and 85.

Gilbert got off the mark in style with a break of 101, but Selby hit back immediately with a majestic 130 break followed by a 97 to move 7-1 in front at the interval.

A 51 break proved insufficient for Gilbert in the first frame after the restart as Selby overturned the deficit to extend his lead, before rounding off the win in style with a sublime break of 101.

The defeat is Gilbert's fourth in a row in ranking finals and his heaviest to date, but sees him climb to a career-high eleventh in the world rankings.
