Judd Trump overturned an 8-5 deficit to edge out Mark Williams in a deciding frame and reach the Semi-Finals of the Tour Championship on Wednesday, while Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Allen also progressed in Llandudno.
Trump, the reigning Masters and Coral World Grand Prix champion, looked set for the exit door at Venue Cymru, but reeled off four consecutive frames to see off the home favourite.
The duo were locked level at four-all following a high quality opening session on Tuesday before Williams began the second session with breaks of 103 and 52 to move two clear.
World Champion Williams then clinched two of the next three frames to move to the verge of victory, but Trump rallied back with breaks of 68, 61 and 59 to force a decider – in which he held firm to complete the comeback.
Trump will now face rival O’Sullivan in a mouth-watering Semi-Final on Thursday after the reigning UK Champion brushed aside Stuart Bingham 9-3.
O’Sullivan, bidding for back-to-back ranking titles, had established a 6-2 overnight lead following a blistering first session in which he produced three centuries.
The second session, however, proved a more cagey affair as O’Sullivan stretched his lead with a 54 break before eventually crossing the line in a gruelling 49-minute tenth frame.
Bingham made a 58 to stop the rot, but could only delay the inevitable as ‘The Rocket’ sealed the deal in the following frame.
“I played well yesterday and got a 6-2 lead but Stuart was making it quite hard work tonight,” O’Sullivan told tournament sponsors Coral.
“He was playing quite slowly, I’d like to see what his shot average was because he was quite slow and dragged the game down.
“I wanted to go out there and enjoy it and keep playing but it got to the point where it was really bad and I didn’t think either of us were going to make 20.
“Judd plays more of an attacking, aggressive game and wants to stamp his authority on it and win it in the right way, so I’m sure tomorrow will be much more of an all-out attacking game.”
Top seed Mark Allen fended off a spirited fightback from German Masters champion Kyren Wilson to seal his spot in the Last Four with a 9-7 success.
Allen had raced into a 7-2 lead with high breaks of 74, 94 and 116, but only for Wilson to hit back with five of the next six frames.
Wilson looked set to force a decider after making a 58 in frame 16, but Scottish Open champion Allen stepped in to clear with 64 and advance to the Semi-Finals.
