Travel chaos causes multiple withdrawals from the Riga Masters

Several players have been forced to withdraw from the 2019 Riga Masters due to travel disruption at Luton Airport last night.

Defending champion Neil Robertson was among a flurry of players to be left stranded after their scheduled flight from Luton to Riga was cancelled late on Thursday evening and no alternative flights could be found from the UK to land in Latvia in time for the start of play on Friday.

Initial problems on the runway followed by thunderstorms in the flight path caused the flight to remain grounded

Robertson was joined by the likes of Kyren Wilson, Robert Milkins, Duane Jones, Joe O'Connor and Jamie O'Neill in withdrawing from the opening ranking event of the season, which runs from July 26-28.

Robertson was scheduled to face Milkins in Round One, and with both players failing to make the fixture, Ben Woollaston has now been handed a bye into the Second Round.

An official statement from World Snooker stated that matches were unable to be rescheduled at short notice and apologised to the fans in Riga:

'Due to a flight cancellation from Luton Airport last night, several players have been unable to make it to Latvia for the Kaspersky Riga Masters which started today.

'We subsequently made every effort to establish which players intended to withdraw from the event and we have now been able to contact all of them. Today’s match schedule has now been updated, and where players have withdrawn, their opponent receives a bye.

'Given the number of players affected and the short notice, it would have been impossible to reschedule all of the relevant matches today. Added to that, it wasn’t until the tournament was well underway that we were able to contact all of the affected players to confirm that they intended to withdraw. It’s an unfortunate situation but beyond our control.

'We realise this is a disappointment to the fans but we hope they will still enjoy what will be a fantastic event in Riga.'
