Judd Trump storms to International Championship glory

Trump kisses the trophy in Daqing

Judd Trump returned to winning ways at the first attempt as he thrashed Shaun Murphy 10-3 to claim the 2019 International Championship title in China on Sunday.

Trump's incredible year continued as he marked a perfect start to the season in his first tournament appearance since becoming World Champion in early May.

Having also regained the world number one spot earlier in the week, Trump culminated a memorable week in Daqing by securing the £175,000 top prize and a twelfth career ranking title.

He raced to the opening five frames of a one-sided final before Murphy took three of the next four to trail 6-3 at the interval.

However, Trump resumed normal service after the restart with four consecutive frames in just one hour to clinch victory.

"After the World Championship, it was always going to be difficult," said Trump.

"I went away and prepared as a world champion should do. It is very easy to get a little bit carried away after wining at the Crucible and to drop off a little bit.

"So to get my foot back on the gas and win in the first event shows just how hard I've worked in the off season."

After establishing a 2-0 lead, Trump compiled his eleventh century break of the tournament - a 104 - and added a 58 in the next to go further clear.

He took the fifth frame to nil before Murphy finally got off the mark with an 87 break and then doubled his tally in frame seven.

Trump made it 6-2 with a break of 74 before Murphy closed the gap back to three thanks to a 79 break in the final frame of the first session.

Murphy, bidding to end a two-year wait for a ranking title, broke off in frame ten but was kept in his seat thereafter as Trump fired in a quick-fire 80 to extend his lead.

Trump then added a break of 63 before turning on the style with a clinical 102 break to move within one of victory - which he soon sealed with a 62 break.

The 29-year-old becomes the first player to win their first tournament as World Champion since Ronnie O'Sullivan back in 2008.
