Judd Trump, Mark Selby and John Higgins were among the notable names to book their places in the Last 16 of the 2019 World Open in Yushan on Wednesday.

World number one Trump stepped up his quest for a second ranking title of the season, following on from the International Championship, with a 5-3 victory over former English Open winner Liang Wenbo.

Trump overturned a 63 break from Liang with an 81 to clinch the first frame, but the pair went into the mid-session interval level at two apiece following a well-taken 80 break from the Chinese star.

Liang then hit the front for the first time in the match, but only for Trump to turn on the style and secure three consecutive frames with breaks of 129, 61 and 105 to seal his progression.

"It was a tough game, we both struggled a bit," admitted Trump. "In the last couple of frames Liang had chances but I just fell over the line.

"I'm not in title-winning form yet but I have the chance to improve."

English Open champion Selby continued his pursuit of back-to-back ranking titles by overcoming Thailand's Noppon Saengkham 5-2.

Selby established a 3-1 lead with breaks of 70, 55 and 75 before Saengkham replied with a superb century to reduce the deficit.

Selby, however, took the sixth frame before putting the gloss on a strong performance with a break of 93 to complete the win.

Higgins stormed into the Third Round after reeling off five consecutive frames to thrash Mark Davis 5-1.

Davis took the lead thanks to a half century in the opening frame, but Higgins hit back emphatically with breaks of 127, 62, 98 and 73 to power over the line.

Home favourite Ding Junhui remained in the running for a second World Open title in the space of three years as he brushed aside Martin O'Donnell 5-2.

Ding, the 2017 champion, fell 2-1 behind but came roaring back with consecutive breaks of 77, 122, 62 and 50 to delight his home crowd in Yushan.

Shoot-Out champion Thepchaiya Un-Nooh underlined his potential by sweeping aside Craig Steadman 5-2 with an average shot time of under 17 seconds.

The Thai ace opened up with a century break (102) and followed in with further efforts of 67, 55, 60 and 51 in closing out a comfortable win.

Elsewhere, a resurgent Michael Holt enjoyed an impressive 5-3 win over former world finalist Barry Hawkins with a top break of 121 along the way.

China Championship winner Shaun Murphy was sent packing by a red hot Graeme Dott as the Scotsman stormed to a 5-1 rout in the battle of the former World Champions.

Zhou Yuelong enjoyed a 5-0 whitewash of former Masters finalist Fergal O'Brien, while David Gilbert, last year's beaten finalist here, replicated that one-sided scoreline against Anthony McGill.

Mark Allen, the 2012 and 2013 champion, safely saw off Zhang Anda 5-3 with high breaks of 108, 98 and 129 in a commanding display, while 2015 World Champion Stuart Bingham defeated Jimmy Robertson 5-3 with top breaks of 121, 83 and 120 in the process.

Ali Carter, the 2016 champion, ended the run of Alfie Burden with a 5-2 success which included a high break of 108, while Kyren Wilson held his nerve to edge out Hossein Vafaei in a last-frame decider.

Joe Perry will take on Trump in the Last 16 after dispatching Grimsby's Stuart Carrington 5-3, while Jack Lisowski brushed aside Xiao Guodong 5-1 and Thailand's Sunny Akani thrashed Elliot Slessor by the same scoreline.
