Stuart Bingham rattled in four century breaks on the way to defeating Mark Selby in the Last 16 of the World Open in Yushan on Thursday, while Michael Holt thrashed home hero Ding Junhui 5-1.
Bingham, the 2015 World Champion, produced his best performance of the season so far to emphatically end Selby’s hopes of back-to-back ranking titles.
Selby, who claimed glory at the recent English Open, looked on course for a place in the Quarter-Finals as he opened up a 2-0 lead with a high break of 86.
But Bingham, however, had other ideas and turned the match on its head with four tons in five frames, kicking off with a 108 before following up a 97 with consecutive breaks of 114, 104 and 117 to stun Selby.
“From 2-0 down I didn’t miss a ball,” Bingham told World Snooker. “I felt better today than I did in my previous two matches.
“My game has been there but I have thrown in some bad performances. Every season my aim is to pick up a trophy, I haven’t had a good season so far so hopefully this week will kick it off.”
Bingham will now face John Higgins in Friday’s Quarter-Finals after the four-time World Champion edged out fellow Scotsman Graeme Dott in a last-frame decider.
Dott had seemingly picked up from where he left off in thrashing Shaun Murphy in the last round as he fired in successive breaks of 104 and 80 to clinch the first two frames.
Higgins hit back with breaks of 71 and 99 to level before the pair exchanged frames five and six for three apiece.
A break of 61 proved insufficient for Higgins in frame seven as Dott nudged back in front, but the 30-time ranking event winner forced a decider with a 60 break before adding a 69 to seal the deal.
World number one Judd Trump came through his second deciding frame of the week as he survived a major scare from Joe Perry.
The reigning World Champion cruised into a 3-0 lead with breaks of 135 and 74, but only for Perry to reel off four in a row with high breaks of 123, 70 and 129 to threaten the comeback.
Trump, however, stopped the rot in frame eight to send it all the way, and after Perry missed the final pink in a nail-biting decider, the International Champion rolled it into the right middle pocket to clinch victory.
Meanwhile, Holt continued his remarkable run in Yushan by dumping out 2017 champion Ding with a ruthless 5-1 victory.
Shoot-out finalist Holt had already seen off Luca Brecel and Barry Hawkins but upset the apple-cart once again to deny the home favourite and reach the Quarter-Finals of the World Open for the first time.
David Gilbert remained on course for back-to-back final appearances in this competition as he defeated two-time champion Mark Allen 5-3, while Thepchaiya Un-Nooh came out on top in the all-Thailand affair against Sunny Akani, prevailing 5-3 while an average shot time of 17 seconds to his opponent’s 26.
Former Shanghai Masters champion Kyren Wilson enjoyed a dominant 5-1 victory over Jack Lisowski with breaks of 77, 86, 108, 102 and 72 to reach his first ranking Quarter-Final of the season.
Wilson will now face Zhou Yuelong after the 21-year-old kept home hopes alive in the tournament by defeating 2016 champion Ali Carter 5-2.
Zhou compiled a brace of century breaks (131 and 131) to Carter’s 141 in frame five as he avenged his defeat to ‘The Captain’ in this year’s World Championship.
