Barry Hawkins established a 5-3 overnight advantage against Mark Williams after the opening session of their World Championship semi-final on Thursday, while John Higgins leads Kyren Wilson by the same scoreline at the Crucible.

Hawkins is appearing in the last four of snooker’s blue-riband event for the fifth time in six years.

He made a bright start in the battle of the left-handers; pouncing on a Williams error with a stunning 129 total clearance before a run of 74 put him 2-0 to the good.

Two-time World champion Williams is making his first appearance at this stage of the competition since 2011.

The Welshman responded well with a top break of 88 as he won two of the next three frames to close the gap to 3-2.

However, 2013 finalist Hawkins restored his authority on the contest with contributions of 52 and 90 putting him 5-2 to the good.

But Williams had the final word in the opening session with a magnificent break of 110 to leave the contest finely poised when the players resume at 2.30pm on Friday.

Meanwhile, Higgins also holds a two-frame buffer ahead of the second session of his showdown with Wilson.

The five-time World champion settled the quicker of the two players with runs of 57, 65 and 77 helping him to a 3-1 lead.

He then produced a sublime 69 clearance to snatch the fifth frame on the black after Wilson had been in first with 61.

Nevertheless, on his first appearance in the one-table set-up at the Crucible, the Warrior responded well with a magnificent total clearance of 140 reducing the deficit to 4-3.

Wilson, who had a nosebleed backstage in between frames, looked set to level at 4-4 but rattled a red in the jaws of the corner pocket, and Higgins stepped in by clearing to the pink to edge his nose in front overnight.
