World Snooker has cancelled its annual Awards Evening in May following consultation with sponsors and broadcast partners.

The Awards Evening was due to be held on Thursday May 9 at the Dorchester Hotel in London, but has been now cancelled and is not set to be rescheduled.

The luxury hotel on Park Lane is one of a chain owned by the Sultan of Brunei - who recently imposed a number of controversial laws against homosexuality.

A subsequent boycott of the hotel chain has been led by celebrities including George Clooney, Elton John and Ellen DeGeneres.

A statement from World Snooker read: 'Following consultation with our many partners, World Snooker has taken the decision to cancel the annual awards event due to take place at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Thursday May 9th.

'World Snooker will continue to present awards to outstanding achievers in snooker following the usual voting procedures. We look forward to congratulating the deserving winners.'

Ronnie O'Sullivan won the Player of The Year and Fans' Player of The Year awards in 2018, while Mark Williams was named Snooker Writer's Player of The Year and Ding Junhui was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
