Marco Fu is out of the 2017 International Championship after suffering a 6-4 defeat against Thailand’s Akani Songsermsawad in the qualifying round on Thursday, while Stephen Maguire hit three centuries on the way to booking his place in the final stages at the Preston Guild Hall.

The exit of world number six Fu was the biggest shock on day three of the qualifiers, as Akani won the last four frames from 4-2 down to seal an impressive victory.

All appeared to be going to plan for the Hong Kong cueist as breaks of 80 and 86 helped him take a 3-1 lead at the mid-session interval.

A fantastic contribution of 126 restored his two-frame buffer at 4-2, but Songsermsawad responded by winning the next two to square the match once again.

The world number 98 then produced a run of 62 to move to the brink of victory, which he secured in style with a brilliant 51 clearance to snatch frame 10 on the black and advance.

He will be joined at the main venue by Maguire, who made breaks of 116, 129 and 111 on the way to a 6-3 success over Borg, while a top run of 133 helped Anthony McGill overcome Aditya Mehta by the same scoreline.

Mark Williams also enjoyed a dominant victory – hitting a break of 129 on the way to seeing off Boonyarit Keattikun 6-1, as a contribution of 121 and five further half-centuries helped Neil Robertson to a 6-2 win over Craig Steadman.

A run of 100 was the highlight of Martin Gould’s 6-4 success against Mitchell Mann, while Ian Burns and Robert Milkins overcame Daniel Wells and Yuan SiJun by the same scoreline respectively.

However, there was no joy for Jimmy White, who slumped to a 6-1 defeat against Xiao Guodong after the Chinese cueist hit a top break of 133 along the way.

Martin O’Donnell had a high break of 110 in his 6-0 whitewash of Mike Dunn and David Gilbert produced four runs over 50 as he beat Liam Highfield 6-1, while Graeme Dott and David Grace were 6-2 winners against Nigel Bond and Xu Si respectively.
