Jimmy White v Joe Perry: German Masters Qualifiers 2017 preview - Gentleman out to tame The Whirlwind

Crowd favourite Jimmy White is aiming to reach the main stages of the German Masters for the first time when he clashes with Joe Perry in the second qualifying round at the Barnsley Metrodome on Friday.

The Whirlwind has appeared at the popular Tempodrom in Berlin before, but only in a second qualifying round encounter with Dominic Dale that was held over in 2013 - eventually losing 5-3.

White showed good character to overcome the first hurdle against Zhou Yuelong on Tuesday, as he recovered from 3-2 down by reeling off the last three frames to prevail.

Apart from his run to the quarter-finals of the Paul Hunter Classic in August, that was only the third victory that the 54-year-old has enjoyed so far this season, but he will have taken a lot of confidence from the closely fought frames that went his way.

The world number 105 does have the better of the head-to-head with Perry, having won three of the four previous meetings between the players in all competitions, although he faces a tough test against the man ranked 97 places higher than him.

Chatteris' Perry also enjoyed a 5-3 success in the opening round in Barnsley as he overcame Kurt Maflin.

However, the Gentleman survived an almighty scare as Maflin battled back from 4-0 down to only trail 4-3, before eventually stumbling over the line on the final black of the eighth frame.

This season's World Open finalist will be hoping for a much smoother passage as he aims to avert another exit from this stage of the German Masters, having missed out on the Tempodrom after falling 5-3 to Rory McLeod 12 months ago.

The winner of this match will play either Matthew Stevens or Robin Hull in the main stages of the competition in Berlin next February.

Play gets underway at 10am GMT on Friday, with the best of nine frames determining who will advance to the Last 32 of the 2017 German Masters.
