Six-time world finalist Jimmy White aims to pull off a major upset by overcoming world number 22 Joe Perry in the second qualifying round of the World Championship in Sheffield on Sunday.

White, who holds an honorary Tour Card, has failed to progress beyond the Last 32 stage of any ranking tournament since last June's Riga Masters and faces an uphill task if he is to roll back the years and claim a famous win here.

At 55, White is the oldest player competing on the professional tour but has shown glimpses of his vintage form at various stages of the season, notably defeating Ali Carter in the UK Championship and Anthony McGill in the German Masters.

The people's champion houses a burning desire to grace the Crucible carpet one more time but has typically fallen short in the qualifying rounds over the past decade, coming closest in 2013 when he was beaten by Robert Milkins in the Last 48.

White began his qualifying quest with an impressive 10-6 victory over highly-rated youngster Sam Craigie and will be keen to sustain the form he showed on Thursday in order to give Perry food for thought.

Perry is targeting a 15th appearance in the main stages of the sport's show-piece and will be determined to make up for lost time after missing out on last year's 40th anniversary tournament.

The Cambridge cueist reached the Semi-Finals a decade ago, losing out to Ali Carter, and wasted little time in thrashing Scotland's Ross Muir for the loss of just one frame in the opening round on Thursday.

The highlight of Perry's season so far saw him reach the Quarter-Finals of the UK Championship, though a number of early exits in ranking events have seen him lose sight of the elite top 16.

Perry has lost four of his six previous meetings with 'The Whirlwind', though only two of their encounters have come within the last five years.

White was a 5-3 winner in the Last 64 of last year's German Masters before Perry prevailed 4-2 in Round Two of the Gibraltar Open later in the season.

Their latest, and most significant contest to date, gets underway from 10am BST at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, with a maximum of nine frames to be contested in the first session before resuming to a finish from 7pm.

Either Shoot-Out champion Michael Georgiou or former Six Reds winner Mark Davis will await the winner in the final qualifying round on Tuesday.
