Ronnie O'Sullivan aims to rubber-stamp his place in the 2017 International Championship by overcoming Gerard Greene in the qualifying round in Preston on Friday.

O'Sullivan is appearing in only his second ranking event of the season as he looks to join the 64-man field in Daqing, China from October 29 to November 5.

The reigning Masters Champion reached the final of the Hong Kong Masters invitational in July before bowing out of the China Championship at the Quarter-Final stage last month.

Crowd favourite O'Sullivan has slipped to 13th in the Order of Merit and will be eyeing a strong run in this lucrative competition to kick-start his campaign.

He returns to the scene of his iconic 1993 UK Championship triumph - the Preston Guild Hall - to face seasoned campaigner Greene, who has struggled for results so far this term.

The 43-year-old regained his Tour Card via the EBSA Play-offs at the back end of last season, with his best run to date coming in the recent Indian Open - where he reached the Last 32.

Greene was runner-up in the 2014 Players Championship Finals and notably lost out to 'The Rocket' in the final of the 2013 Paul Hunter Classic.

Now world ranked number 101, Greene is aiming to turn back the clock and pull off what would be a huge upset over this relatively long format.

O'Sullivan has won five of the six previous meetings between the two dating back 20 years, with Greene's sole head-to-head victory coming in the 1997 British Open.

Their latest encounter gets underway from 7.30pm BST and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at The Preston Guild Hall.
