The season’s second world ranking event will feature the world’s top 16 stars joined by a further 16 qualifiers in the lucrative main event next month.
Unlike the majority of major ranking events, the Shanghai Masters continues to incorporate the old-style structured draw format, meaning the top 16 in the world rankings are seeded to the venue, while players enter the fray in qualifying according to their ranking position.
Among the notable names kicking off their qualifying campaigns include former World finalist Matthew Stevens, who takes on Scotland’s Fraser Patrick in the evening session.
Welsh ace Stevens has tumbled to 34 in the world rankings following a barren spell of form over the past 18 months and is looking to kick-start a potential revival this week.
Two of Stevens’ fellow countrymen collide in the morning session as former Shoot-Out champion Dominic Dale takes on Lee Walker.
Flamboyant character Dale famously won this competition back in 2007 – his second career ranking title – and aims to roll back the years by securing a return to the prestigious event in September.

Journeyman Mark King faces a tricky test against Sheffield youngster Joel Walker in the afternoon session – after he overcame local rival Adam Duffy in round one.
Vinnie Calabrese, who partnered Neil Robertson for Australia in June’s Snooker World Cup, meets 2014 World Championship debutant Kyren Wilson in another close-looking contest.
Belgian sensation Luca Brecel aims to avoid an upset by overcoming former world finalist Nigel Bond – who enjoyed a terrific 5-0 whitewash of Chris Wakelin in his opener on Thursday.
Peter Lines, father of fellow professional Oliver Lines, meets young gun Sydney Wilson, while Indian number one Aditya Mehta faces Gareth Allen.
Norway’s Kurt Maflin takes on Chinese star Lu Ning in one of six live streamed matches throughout the day, as Scottish star Jamie Burnett goes head-to-head with Eden Sharav.
China’s Cao Yupeng meets Thai veteran James Wattana, while Tian Pengfei, who was highly impressive in his first round win, looks to continue in that vain against Yu De Lu.
The action gets underway at 10am BST, with all matches to be contested over the best of nine frames from the Barnsley Metrodome.
