Joe Perry quashed any hopes of a fairy-tale Crucible return for Jimmy White with a 10-5 victory in the second qualifying round on Sunday, while Tian Pengfei sealed a dramatic deciding frame win over Yan Bingtao.

Perry, the world number 22, had been pushed hard by the six-time world finalist in the opening session but stamped his authority after the restart to move a step closer to The Crucible.

Perry had clinched a crucial ninth frame with a classy break of 125 to lead 5-4 at the close of play in the afternoon before reeling off the next four frames thanks to breaks of 61, 62, 62 and 74.

White rallied back with a break of 81 to stop the rot, but Perry sealed the deal in frame 15 to end The Whirlwind's hopes of a first appearance in the sport's show-piece since 2006.

Perry will now face Mark Davis in the final qualifying round after the Hastings ace recorded an outstanding 10-0 whitewash of reigning Shoot-Out champion Michael Georgiou.

Yan Bingtao, one of this season's stand-out performers was denied an immediate return to snooker's spiritual home after an agonising 10-9 defeat to Chinese compatriot Tian Pengfei.

Yan began the match brightly with breaks of 100, 54, 67 and 70 en route to a 6-1 lead before Tian took the next two frames with breaks of 55 and 53 to give himself a lifeline.

He then signalled his intentions after the restart with a stunning break of 102 and followed up with a 64 to peg back to just 6-5 behind.

Tian then clinched three of the next four frames to hit the front, and after making a half century to go 9-8 ahead, Yan hit back with a 72 break to force a decider.

The 18-year-old, however, was a mere spectator as Tian compiled a majestic break of 127 to reach the final qualifying round for the first time.

Ken Doherty moved a step closer to what could prove to be his Crucible swansong as he comfortably overcame Northern Ireland's Gerard Greene 10-4.

Doherty, who defeated Josh Boileau in Round One, fired in back-to-back centuries (102 and 133) in the first session on the way to setting up a show-down with Matthew Stevens.

Stevens, a two-time world finalist, came from 9-7 down to crush the hopes of 17-year-old sensation Yuan Sijun in a last-frame decider.

The Welshman underlined his vast experienced as he reeled off consecutive breaks of 57, 72 and 68 to remain on course for a first Crucible appearance since 2015.

Graeme Dott, the 2006 World Champion, continued his ruthless vein of form as he brushed aside Thailand's Sunny Akani for the loss of just two frames.

Dott, who thrashed Adrian Ridley 10-1 in his opener, produced a high break of 100 in frame seven to remain firmly on track for a fourth consecutive World Championship qualification.

Teesside's Mike Dunn is just one win away from a first Crucible appearance in 16 years after he powered past Dominic Dale 10-3, while Cheshire's Andrew Higginson dispatched Finland's Robin Hull 10-5.

Ricky Walden, semi-finalist in 2013, came from 6-4 down to seal a 10-7 triumph over Wales' Lee Walker with high breaks of 102 and 135.

Alfie Burden took another big step towards ending his 20-year Crucible hiatus as he held his nerve to edge out David Gilbert in a nail-biting last-frame decider.
