Live Snooker on Wednesday April 18: World Championship Qualifiers Day Eight preview and order of play

Jamie Jones needs just one more frame for victory over Liang Wenbo when they resume their World Championship qualifier on Wednesday, while a place at the Crucible is within touching distance of Jack Lisowski and Matthew Stevens in Sheffield.

Welshman Jones, who reached the quarter-finals on his Crucible debut in 2012, all but secured his return to the Theatre of Dreams following a dream opening session against Liang on Tuesday.

The Neath cueist made eight breaks over 50 as he won all nine frames and now needs just one more to ensure his name is in the hat for Thursday’s first-round draw.

Following a nightmare day at the English Institute of Sport, world number 19 Liang shall be desperate to keep his pride intact at the very least.

He will look to draw on inspiration from his performance against Rod Lawler earlier in the week, when he came agonisingly close to becoming the first player to make two maximum breaks in a single match.

Elsewhere, Chris Wakelin is also within touching distance of making his Crucible debut after establishing an 8-1 lead over Tian Pengfei – the same scoreline by which Xiao Guodong is to the good against Adam Duffy.

Alan McManus and Ken Doherty have plenty of work to do if they are to secure a return to the final stages of the tournament.

They trail 7-2 against Jack Lisowski and Matthew Stevens respectively, as do Mark Davis against Joe Perry, Michael Holt against Robert Milkins and Rory McLeod against Lyu Haotian.

However, Ryan Day and Stephen Maguire are in strong positions to progress to the Crucible. Welshman Day is 6-3 to the good against Peter Ebdon, as is Scotsman Maguire over Hossein Vafaei.

Meanwhile, the remaining six matches are finely poised with just one frame separating the players in question going into the final session.

That is the case Michael White and Ricky Walden, who are 5-4 up on Jimmy Robertson and Andrew Higginson respectively, as is Stuart Carrington against Zhang Anda and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh against Alfie Burden.

Former World champion Graeme Dott trails Mike Dunn, who is eyeing a first appearance in the final stages since 2002, while Liam Highfield narrowly leads Daniel Wells in the battle of the potential Crucible debutants.

Play at the English Institute of Sport gets underway at 11am BST with 10 frames the target for the 32 players looking to book their places at the Crucible.
