John Higgins tips Mark Selby to threaten record world title tally

John Higgins believes Mark Selby could dominate snooker "for the foreseeable future" after claiming a third World Championship title at The Crucible on Monday.

Selby defeated Higgins 18-15 to claim the crown for the third time in the space of four years as he became only the fourth player in Crucible history to successfully defend the title.

The runaway world number one overturned a 10-4 deficit on the way to claiming the £375,000 top prize, and Higgins admits Selby could be the man to threaten Stephen Hendry's record tally of seven world titles.

"He was really strong and plays such a tough game," said Higgins. "When you’re off the table for so long, it’s hard to find your rhythm again and he keeps on punishing you. Every credit to him, he’s a fantastic champion.

"I think he’ll add to his tally, whether it’s one, two, three or four. He looks like he could be the challenger to Stephen Hendry’s seven because he really is granite and you’ve got to take your hat off to him.

"He could dominate for the foreseeable future. The likes of me and Ronnie are still good players, but maybe age is catching up with us.

"It's maybe up to the likes of Robertson, Trump and Ding to really, really challenge him.

"I never played Davis at his peak. I played Hendry at his peak, but he was a different type of player – similar to Ronnie. Mark's the toughest player I’ve ever faced."

Higgins was denied the chance to claim a fifth Betfred World Championship title in his sixth final in Sheffield, but insists he is proud of his efforts over the 17 days.

"I think I’ve acquitted myself really well during this tournament," he added. "I've really enjoyed it and the way I’ve kept myself under control.

"I'm delighted to have reached the final, I gave it my all and I'm proud of myself."
