The Shanghai Masters is a professional ranking tournament, one of a handful to be held in the snooker hotbed of China.

The event was introduced in the 2007/2008 season and has grown to become the most notable televised event in the Asian province, offering £450,000 in prize money.

In the nine previous stagings of the event there have been nine different winners: Dominic Dale, Ricky Walden, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Ali Carter, Mark Selby, John Higgins, Ding Junhui, Stuart Bingham and Kyren Wilson.

The field of players is made up of the world's top 16, alongside the 16 successful qualifiers and a series of local wildcard players from the host nation. 

The tournament currently takes place at the Shanghai Grand Stage, Shanghai in September and is the fifth ranking event of the season.
