Jimmy White booked a place in the 2018 International Championship courtesy of a 6-5 win over Fergal O’Brien in the qualifying round in Barnsley on Wednesday.

White, 56, secured a spot in the lucrative main event in China for the first time since 2014 after holding his nerve to edge a close-run contest.

The six-time world finalist trailed O’Brien 5-4 before recovering to win the last two frames and progress to the Last 64 of the ¬£775,000 major.

It was O’Brien who took the first frame with a break of 60 before White hit back to clinch the next two to take the lead.

O’Brien levelled with a break of 64 before compiling a magnificent 104 break after the interval to regain the upper-hand at 3-2.

A 72 break in response from White saw him draw level before overturning a half century from the Irishman with a 53 break to snatch the lead.

The high quality standard continued as O’Brien replied with a 66 break before dominating frame nine to move to the verge of victory.

White held his nerve to edge a tense tenth frame by 54 points to 46 and force a decider – in which he turned on the style with a timely break of 76 to clinch victory.

Elsewhere, Stephen Maguire produced a masterclass of break-building on his way to a 6-0 whitewash of Duane Jones.

Former UK Champion Maguire registered breaks of 83 and 65 to establish a 2-0 lead and looked on course for a maximum in frame three, but only to break down on 113 after missing the 15th black.

Nonetheless, he followed up with consecutive contributions of 68, 56 and 79 to romp into the main stages from October 28 to November 4.

Joe Perry, runner-up in last Sunday’s European Masters, secured his latest trip to China following a 6-3 defeat of Harvey Chandler.

Perry continued his fine run of form by producing breaks of 62, 59 and 79 to safely seal his progression.

World number 13 Ryan Day came out on top in his all-Welsh clash with Lee Walker, wrapping up a 6-2 win with a high break of 134 along the way.

Martin Gould fired in a magnificent break of 137 en route to a commanding 6-1 victory over Zhang Yong, while Robert Milkins produced a pair of centuries (104 and 110) in his 6-1 rout of Hong Kong’s Andy Lee.

China Championship quarter-finalist Yuan Sijun set up a First Round show-down with Kyren Wilson courtesy of a 6-2 win over Robbie Williams with a top break of 92.

David Lilley won through to the Last 64 of a ranking tournament for only the fifth time in his career after an impressive 6-4 scalp of Ricky Walden with a high break of 99.

Alan McManus battled his way to a 6-5 victory over Welsh youngster Jamie Clarke with a high break of 99, while Eden Sharav clinched an impressive deciding-frame scalp of Dominic Dale.
