The 16 second round winners will take on the next highest ranked 16 players from the order of merit, with a place in the final qualifying round up for grabs.
Six-time World Champion Steve Davis takes centre stage in the first of three sessions as he hosts Indian sensation Pankaj Advani for the right to face Jamie Burnett on Friday.
Veteran Davis remains one of the game’s most loved characters and a superb ambassador for the game, with his passion for playing undiminished even after spending a staggering 34 years at the top level.
The Nugget has lifted this title on no fewer than six occasions and has enjoyed a good qualifying record for snooker’s second biggest ranking tournament in recent years, notably winning through to the main event last year where he was to meet Ronnie O’Sullivan in round one.
Davis, however, faces a tricky opener against 27-year-old Advani – the reigning World Billiards Champion – who denied Davis a dream showdown with Jimmy White after defeating ‘The Whirlwind’ 6-5 in a thrilling contest on Wednesday.
China’s Xiao Goudong takes on resident Sheffield cueist Adam Duffy in the morning’s other live streamed clash, while action on the outer tables is headed by Belgian sensation Luca Brecel, who faces fellow emerging star Liu Chuang, with both out to go one step closer to a dream UK Championship debut.
Andy Hicks produced a sensational 147 break to secure a 6-2 win over Daniel Wells in the last round and will be hoping replicate that brilliance when he returns to face Mark Joyce.
The afternoon session features Welsh youngster Jamie Jones up against Thailand’s Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, with the man from the Valleys looking to add a maiden York Barbican appearance to his dream debut at the Crucible this year.
Cao Yupeng is one of a host of Chinese stars out to impress on day three and he takes on the vastly experienced Dave Harold in another tasty looking tie.
World Seniors Champion Nigel Bond enters the fray on Thursday evening as he awaits the winner of methodical Liverpool veteran Rod Lawler of Thailand’s Dechawat Poomjaeng, meanwhile highly rated Welsh youngster Michael White comes up against either Mike Dunn or Craig Steadman.
Action begins at 9.30am BST and two matches from each session will be streamed live over the best of 11 frames from the World Snooker Academy, Sheffield.
