Kyren Wilson produced a pair of dominant displays to win Group Three of the 2018 Champion of Champions in Coventry on Wednesday and book his place in the Semi-Finals.
The reigning Paul Hunter Classic and Six Reds champion swept aside Mark Williams and Judd Trump for the combined loss of just two frames to reach the Last Four of the elite invitational for the second time.
Wilson began with a 4-1 victory over World Champion Williams in the afternoon session before returning to sweep aside Trump 6-1 in the evening with the aid of two century breaks.
He will now face the winner of Group Two – either Mark Selby, Neil Robertson, Barry Hawkins or Mark Allen – in Saturday’s second Semi-Final.
“Drawing the World Champion in the First Round is no easy draw but it’s the Champion of Champions, they’re all tough matches,” said Wilson.
“I’m quite pleased with the way I played all day really, I think I was quite solid against Mark and stepped it up against Judd.
“I was quite shocked to walk in the practice room and Judd was sat down, I tried to get back on the practice table to get my arm going and I thought he’d have done the same.
“Just sending these little messages to players just makes you think, maybe I want it a bit more than you.
“I think I’ve had quite a good season, I’ve been to the latter stages of most events, just had a poor last couple of events where I’ve lost to two very hungry Asian players that don’t leave the practice table.”
Wilson began the group final with a break of 73 to clinch the opening frame before following up with a 61 to double his advantage.
Trump got off the mark with a 73 break of his own to halve the deficit, but Wilson responded with a superb break of 93 to make it 3-1.
The Masters finalist then turned on the style after the interval with back-to-back clearances of 125 and 131 to keep Trump in his seat, before putting the gloss on a fabulous victory with a further half century.
The Kettering ace had raced into a 3-0 lead over Williams in his group opener, producing a high break of 71, before the Welshman opened his account with a 68.
Wilson, however, crushed any hopes of a comeback from the world number two by sealing frame four to book his place in the decider.
Trump avenged his 4-0 whitewash at the hands of Luca Brecel in last year’s group Semi-Final with a 4-1 rout of the Belgian.
It was Brecel who clinched the first frame with a break of 69, but Trump levelled and went on to make breaks of 93 and 73 en route to a further three consecutive frames.
