Republic of Ireland secured their first win of the 2019 Snooker World Cup at the expense of neighbours Northern Ireland, while China A & B, Wales, England, Scotland and Belgium maintained their unbeaten starts.

Veteran duo Ken Doherty and Fergal O’Brien has suffered 3-2 defeats at the hands of England and Iran in their opening two Group B matches, but registered their first victory in style with a 4-1 rout of Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen and Jordan Brown.

The triumph, which included a 57 break in the pairs frame and a 60 from O’Brien against Brown, keeps Ireland in contention with eight points in a closely-matched Group B, level with Northern Ireland and just one point adrift of leaders England.

Kyren Wilson and Jack Lisowski held firm to seal a narrow 3-2 win over Iran’s Hossein Vafaei and Soheil Vahedi with a notable break of 67 in the pairs tie.

Defending champions China A have now taken 12 points from a possible 15 after they thrashed Austria 4-1 to extend their lead at the top of Group A.

China B occupy top spot in Group D by just a single point after they whitewashed Switzerland 5-0 with a tournament high break of 138 from Liang Wenbo along the way.

They are closely pursued by Wales – who brushed aside Malta 4-1, with Mark Williams powering in a superb 127 clearance in frame five after Alex Borg had defeated Ryan Day to secure a point for Malta.

Scotland’s John Higgins and Stephen Maguire lead the way in Group C after whitewashing Israel’s Eden Sharav and Shachar Ruberg, while Belgium remain hot on their heels after overcoming Malaysia 4-1.

Thailand take up second spot in Group A after edging past Poland 3-2, while United Arab Emirates pulled off a shock 3-2 win over Cyprus in Group C.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stages, with the order being determined by total frames won.
