Ryan Day picked up his second ranking silverware of the season at the 2018 Gibraltar Open courtesy of a 4-0 whitewash of Cao Yupeng in the final.

Day, who claimed his first ranking title at the Riga Masters last June, doubled his tally after a series of impressive displays at the Victoria Stadium.

Having won through the opening three rounds on Friday, the Welshman began Sunday with a 4-1 victory over Fang Xiongman in the Last 16 before powering past Joe Perry by the same scoreline.

Day then withheld a stern fightback from Scott Donaldson – who came from 3-0 down to force a decider – before ‘Dynamite’ sealed the win with a 61 break to reach the final.

A ruthless performance from the 37-year-old saw him restrict Cao to just 24 points in the entire contest as he fired in high breaks of 58, 72 and 100.

“I’m delighted to win another tournament,” said Day. “It’s been a long couple of days but I fell over the line there.

“To win two events in a short period of time is really good and there’s a lot of positives to take, that’s for sure.

“The goal going towards the end of the season is not to have to play three matches to qualify for the Crucible, I’m not in China so I’ll have to have a good run in Llandudno next week.”

Day’s ¬£25,000 top prize sees him climb to 17th in the Order of Merit, hot on the heels of Anthony McGill in the all-important 16th position.

Cao began the season ranked outside the world’s top 100 but is now on the verge of the top 50 after reaching his second ranking final of the season, following on from last December’s Scottish Open.

Cao defeated Yu Delu in the Last 16 before whitewashing former World Champion Stuart Bingham and ending the ground-breaking run of Lee Walker – who was appearing in his first ever ranking Semi-Final at the age of 42.
