David Gilbert produced an inspired turnaround from 3-0 down to stun Kurt Maflin 4-3 and advance to the third round of the 2017 Indian Open, while Shaun Murphy and Stuart Bingham enjoyed comfortable victories in Vishakhapatnam.

Just 16 players remain following day three of the fourth ranking event this season, as the initial 32-man field was cut in half on Thursday.

World number 21 Gilbert appeared to be heading for the exit when he fell 3-0 behind against Maflin, who had a break of 64 before producing a magnificent total clearance of 135 to move to the brink of victory.

However, the Tamworth cueist hit back with runs of 68 and 64 to force a decider, in which a contribution of 56 was enough to see him over the line.

Gilbert’s reward is a showdown with sixth seed Mark Allen, who made breaks of 75 and 58 during a 4-2 success against Alexander Ursenbacher.

Elsewhere, Elliot Slessor survived an impressive Joe Perry from 3-0 down to level at 3-3, before prevailing in the decider, while Liam Highfield recovered from 3-1 behind to see off Yu Delu. Ken Doherty also needed a seventh and final frame to overcome Sam Baird on the colours, as did Xu Si after overturning a 3-2 deficit to dispatch Sean O’Sullivan.

There were no such problems for world number five Murphy, as the Magician had centuries of 125 and 105 during a dominant 4-1 win over Fergal O’Brien, while Bingham and reigning champion Anthony McGill enjoyed comfortable victories by the same scoreline against Matthew Selt and Rory McLeod respectively.

Mark King was also a 4-1 winner against Graeme Dott as Akani Songsermsawad whitewashed Dominic Dale 4-0, and John Higgins overcame Martin O’Donnell 4-2 to set up a clash with Michael Holt, who recovered from 2-0 down to beat Gary Wilson by the same margin.

Meanwhile, 2015 finalist Ricky Walden enjoyed a 4-2 success against Ben Woollaston, as did Hossein Vafaei and Zhang Anda against Gerard Greene and Tian Pengfei respectively.
