Six-time world finalist Jimmy White set up a Second Round clash with Ali Carter in the World Championship qualifiers on Saturday, as former World Champions Ken Doherty and Graeme Dott also advanced to Round Two.

White, who last featured at The Crucible back in 2006, closed out a 10-5 victory over Irish youngster Ross Bulman at the English Institute of Sport.

The Whirlwind, who is also bidding for tour survival at the end of the season, pressed home a 6-3 overnight lead to set up a crunch clash with ‘The Captain’ on Monday.

Carter, runner-up to Ronnie O’Sullivan in 2008 and 2012, swiftly sealed the two frames he required to complete a 10-1 demolition of Paul Davison with three centuries to his name.

Ken Doherty, the 1997 World Champion, battled through a tough test against Hong Kong’s Andy Lee to seal a 10-8 success and set up a meeting with in-form Scott Donaldson – the recent China Open semi-finalist who overcame Craig Steadman 10-8.

Graeme Dott, World Champion in 2006, pressed home a 7-2 first session lead with three consecutive frames to sweep aside Pakisan’s Hamza Akbar and progress to a meeting with Xu Si – who produced a phenomenal scoring display in his 10-2 rout of Sean O’Sullivan, firing in a century plus a further eight breaks over 70.

Two-time world finalist Matthew Stevens moved safely through to the Second Round after a 10-3 triumph over Malaysia’s Thor Chuan Leong with two centuries along the way.

Ryan Day, the number one seed, fended off a potential banana skin at the hands of Leeds ace Oliver Lines to complete a 10-6 victory and set up a show-down with Tian Pengfei – who overcame Iran’s Soheil Vahedi 10-5.

John Astley pulled off an impressive 10-8 defeat of 18-year-old Gibraltar Open semi-finalist Yuan Sijun, while former ranking event winner Michael White dispatched veteran Andy Hicks 10-4.
