Noppon Saengkham has climbed into the top 50 for the first time in the latest revision of the World Snooker rankings following the Welsh Open.

The 25-year-old enjoyed his best performance in a ranking event to date after going all the way to the semi-finals in Cardiff; beating the likes of Judd Trump and Kyren Wilson along the way.

That run lifted the Thai cueist 11 places to a career high of 47th on the Order of Merit. He also becomes his country’s number one player as a result, after compatriot Thepchaiya Un-Nooh dropped seven spots to 60th.

Saengkham’s fellow semi-finalist Gary Wilson also enjoyed a decent climb up the rankings following his run to the Last Four in Cardiff. The former China Open runner-up rose eight places to 42nd on the Order of Merit.

John Higgins went on to lift the trophy in the Welsh capital for a record fifth time after beating Barry Hawkins 9-7 in the final.

As a result, the Wizard remained fifth but closed the gap on the top four, while Hawkins climbed a place to seventh.

Meanwhile, a resurgent Stephen Maguire cut the distance between himself and the top 16 to less than £16,000 as he moved up two places to 17th in the rankings.

Further down the list, Ian Burns’ reward for reaching the quarter-finals was to rise nine spots to 91st, while Nigel Bond was the biggest mover as he climbed 12 places to 108th after getting to the Last 16.
