Williams into Champion of Champions semis after Wilson epic

Kyren Wilson headlines the action on day two of the 2024 Champion of Champions at the Toughsheet Community Stadium in Bolton.

The reigning Crucible king is joined by Mark Williams, Luca Brecel and Bai Yulu in Group Three on Tuesday, and what is the only group at this year’s tournament comprising of four World champions.

Wilson goes head to head with Brecel in a battle of the two most recent winners at the Crucible.

The Warrior returns to this event having missed out 12 months ago, and his six previous appearances have yielded a final and two semi-final appearances.

Runner-up to Ronnie O’Sullivan in 2018 – when he agonisingly lost 10-9 from 9-8 up – Wilson also reached the last four on debut in 2015 and 2021.

Already a winner at the Xi’an Grand Prix and Northern Ireland Open this season, he would love to go the extra step in Bolton and add this trophy to his ever-growing silverware collection.

All four of Wilson’s previous clashes with Brecel outside the Championship League have seen the winner reach the final of the respective tournament.

That will encourage the Belgian as he looks to kick-start a disappointing season to date, in which he has already suffered four first-round exits.

Qualifying for this tournament as a ranking top-up, Brecel is hoping for better fortunes, having lost each of his last four matches in the event.

Meanwhile, Williams is seeking his first ever Champion of Champions victory as he prepares to face the reigning Women’s World champion in Bai.

The reigning Tour Championship winner – and runner-up in the inaugural Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters – the three-time Crucible king is making his fourth appearance in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Bai becomes the fourth woman to participate in the event – after Reanne Evans, Mink Nutcharut and Baipat Siripaporn – and will hope she is the first to record a victory.

Play gets under way at 1pm GMT on Tuesday with the two group semi-finals played over the best of seven frames each, before the group final at 7pm is contested over the best of 11.
