Mark Williams goes head to head with Neil Robertson on Saturday for the right to play Xiao Guodong in the 2024 Champion of Champions final.
Two of snooker’s most decorated left-handers face off in a mouth-watering semi-final clash at the Toughsheet Community Stadium in Bolton.
The recent head-to-head record certainly favours Robertson, who has prevailed in each of the last seven meetings (excluding the Championship League).
That included their memorable showdown at this stage of the 2022 Masters, where the Australian recovered from needing two snookers to snatch victory from under Williams’ nose on the final black.
Two-time winner Robertson is appearing in his sixth Champion of Champions semi-final, having prevailed from Group Two on Tuesday.
The Thunder edged out Ali Carter 4-3 in his opening match, before battling past Judd Trump in the group final – with his sheer joy and relief evident upon potting match ball.
As for Williams, he had never previously won a match in each of his three appearances in this tournament.
However, the Welshman stopped the rot by defeating both the reigning men’s and women’s World champions.
Williams opened with a 4-1 win over Bai Yulu before producing a magnificent 140 total clearance – the highest break of the week so far – on his way to edging out Kyren Wilson in the group final.
It promises to be an entertaining Saturday night in Bolton. Whoever prevails will be in for a tough final against Xiao, who has enjoyed a tournament debut to remember, having defeated Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Selby and Mark Allen to reach the showpiece.
The match gets under way at 7pm GMT on Saturday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
