Mark Selby and Stephen Maguire face off in the opening round of The Masters for the third time in four years as they return to Alexandra Palace on Tuesday night.

A repeat of last year’s show-down behind closed doors in Milton Keynes sees Selby bidding for revenge over the Scotsman to start the new year on a high.

Selby is one of only six players to have won The Masters title on three or more occasions, though his most recent triumph came back in 2013.

The reigning and four-time World Champion has had a relatively quiet season so far by his standards, with his best run coming at the World Grand Prix shortly before Christmas – when he reached the Semi-Finals.

The world number one will be looking to improve on a below-par recent record in the sport’s most prestigious invitational, having won just one match in his last four appearances.

Selby is making his 15th consecutive appearance at The Masters, having claimed glory on his debut at the Wembley Arena back in 2008.

Maguire, meanwhile, comes into this event on the back of successive ranking event Quarter-Finals at the Scottish Open and World Grand Prix and will be determined to kick-start an otherwise underwhelming season so far.

The six-time ranking event winner made his Masters debut back in 2005 and is a four-time semi-finalist, most recently in 2014.

The 40-year-old defeated Selby 6-3 in the First Round 12 months ago to mark his first win over ‘The Jester’ in this competition at the fourth time of asking.

Selby had previously prevailed in the 2008 Quarter-Finals, 2010 Semi-Finals and 2019 First Round and has won ten of their 19 encounters in all competitions.

Their latest show-down gets under way from 7pm GMT on Tuesday and will be contested over the best of 11 frames.

Former Masters finalist Barry Hawkins awaits the winner in the Quarter-Finals on Friday.
