O’Sullivan and Selby renew their rivalry

Ronnie O’Sullivan renews his rivalry with Mark Selby on Friday in a blockbuster clash for a place in the Shanghai Masters final.

The three-time reigning champion puts his title defence on the line once more in another mouth-watering showdown at Shanghai Grand Stage, with Selby the latest player attempting to dethrone him.

It should be another epic contest between the two contrasting heavyweights, and this will be the seventh time they face off in a semi-final.

O’Sullivan has prevailed in four of their previous six such encounters, including a nail-biting 17-16 victory in their Crucible classic three years ago.

Having opted out of participating in the Championship League and withdrawing from the recent European Masters on medical grounds, the Rocket is appearing in his first tournament of the season.

After beating Ali Carter 6-3, it looked like a fourth successive Shanghai Masters crown would elude him when John Higgins established a 5-2 lead in their quarter-final meeting.

But the four-time champion, who also lifted the trophy in 2009, dug deep and produced sublime successive centuries to stun his friendly foe in a deciding frame.

Selby also went to the wire in his opening match against Hossein Vafaei – a player who had beaten him in their three previous meetings – but held his nerve to prevail.

The winner of this event in 2011, he then ended his five-game losing streak against Judd Trump in emphatic fashion – hitting breaks of 87, 83, 80, 75 and 63 as he condemned his opponent to a comprehensive 6-1 rout.

Both players are full of momentum and should produce another thrilling encounter, with either Luca Brecel or Neil Robertson awaiting the winner in Sunday’s showpiece.

Play gets under way at 7am BST and will be contested over the best of 19 frames at Shanghai Grand Stage.
